DUP urged to stop wasting assembly time with meaningless anti-Irish motions - Brolly MLA

13 November, 2007

Speaking before a debate on the "club bank" scheme for schools Sinn Féin Irish language spokesperson Francie Brolly MLA has lambasted Anti Irish language campaigners for another pointless debate aimed at attacking a cultural tool.

He said,

"Tomorrow's debate on the school's club bank scheme was aimed at attacking Irish medium education by DUP MLA's Michelle Mc Ilveen and Mervyn Storey.

"In fact, as a result of an over-eagerness to attack what is part of all our heritage on this island, what the DUP have done is attack a fundraising scheme which was aimed at facilitating integrated education 10 years ago.

"Nil ciall ar bith leis an mholadh seo os rud e nach mbeidh club bank ann i ndiaidh dha bhliain agus bhi an club bank ag dul ar aghaidh le blianta fada ag na scoileanna iomlanaithe.

"No Irish school has received any money from this scheme to date.

"It should be pointed out that the club bank is not designed to establish schools, it is a way of ensuring that schools which are already recognised and funded by the Department of Education can function adequately.

"I would urge Ms Mc Ilveen and Mr Storey to be more cautious in her approach in the future and stop wasting the time of the assembly." Deireadh
