Fury at Iris Robinson as Health Minister sent packing

14 November, 2007

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson, Carál Ní Chuilín has said that Iris Robinson has overstepped her authority as Chair of the Assembly Health Committee after she told the Health Minister Michael McGimpsey that she did not want him to attend the committee for a discussion on the Health Budget.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"This sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable.

"The committee plays a key role in the budget process and the engagement with the Minister is essential in ensuring that we get the right spending priorities within the department.

"Iris Robinson may well want to get involved in a protracted defence of her husband the Finance Minister but the committee has important work to do and is the wrong place to play out this petty political bickering.

"Michael McGimpsey had made himself available to the committee after a planned visit to the US was cancelled.

"However, Iris Robinson has now totally overstepped her authority as Chair of the Assembly Health Committee. Her actions were not even discussed with other committee members." ENDS
