‘Commitment to Derry welcome’ - Anderson

15 November, 2007

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed a commitment by the First and Deputy First Ministers to tackle the neglect of Derry.

Ms. Anderson said:

"Providing new infrastructure - in particular a motorway from Derry to Belfast is one of the key aims of Sinn Féin's Stand Up For Derry campaign.

"Therefore, during this week's Assembly question time, I asked the First Minister to outline how the Executive's proposed investment strategy will address regional disparity in terms of infrastructure investment, particularly in Derry.

"No-one can deny that Derry has been overlooked for decades when it came to such investment and I am pleased that the First Minister Ian Paisley gave a solid commitment to address this issue.

"To quote him directly the First Minister, 'My answer is absolutely in the affirmative. We intend to do exactly that. I visited Foyle recently and I was struck by the wonderful potential there'.

Ms Anderson concluded by saying:

"And while that commitment is welcome, Sinn Féin intends to ensure that it is delivered upon because, to quote another well-worn phrase, 'words must be matched by actions." ENDS
