Threats to Republicans including DPP members

16 November, 2007

Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly has said that the threats from dissidents to Sinn Féin Councillors, members of the District Policing Partnerships and republicans across Belfast will not stop any republican from working for political and social progress and Irish Unity.

Mr Kelly said:

"Threats have been issued to Belfast Sinn Féin councillors, including those sitting on the District Policing Partnership in recent days.

"There have also been threats made against a number of other republicans across the city including those who have given many years to the republican struggle and their local communities.

"These threats are coming from people who claim to be republicans. They are the same people who made repeated threats to the wife of Martin Meehan, Briege, in the days before his sudden death.

"These people have nothing constructive to offer the republican struggle. They have nothing like a fraction of the committed activism of people like Martin and Briege Meehan and the many other republicans that are being threatened.

"There has also been contact with the local media from someone claiming to represent the same group threatening all Sinn Féin members. I have to say those behind these threats need to reflect long and hard on their position.

"They have joined a long line of people including the British State and their surrogate loyalist gangs in threatening and targeting republicans and nationalists. These threats and campaigns of violence against our party failed in the past to stop us representing the people who elect us and they will continue to fail in the future." ENDS
