Sinn Féin Donegal Senator welcomes Committee programme of work

20 November, 2007

Sinn Féin Donegal Senator Pearse Doherty has today welcomed the Arts, Sport, Tourism, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs joint Committees agreement to accept his proposals in its programme of work for the coming Dáil year.

Senator Doherty said:

“During the initial meeting of the committee I proposed that we discuss with Údarás na Gaeltachta the economic and social issues in the region with particular reference to the Donegal Gaeltacht.

“I also proposed that we discuss the decline of rural Ireland, both in economic and social terms with an emphasis on the roll out of essential library services.

“If this committee is to be of any practical use to the Gaeltacht regions we need to fully comprehend the challenges they face with regards to social and economic issues.

“These areas have lost a multitude of local services such as shops, post offices, banks and garda stations. Such losses adversely affect community life on every level putting in doubt the sustainability of entire regions.

“Today’s agreement by the Committee to meet with and discuss such critical issues with Údarás na Gaeltachta is an important step forward” CRÍOCH
