Simpson challenged over untrue allegations

21 November, 2007

Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Francie Molloy has challenged DUP MP David Simpson to repeat his untrue allegations in public and also to come clean about details he may have about a convicted UVF killer.

Mr Molloy said:

"These allegations are completely untrue and since the summer when David Simpson first briefed sections of the media on this matter I have been inundated with messages of support from Republicans across Ireland who know me and know my record of service to the Republican cause.

"Simpson follows in a long line of unionist MPs who have in the past abused parliamentary privilege to chase headlines regardless of the consequences. Like his fellow unionist MPs I have no doubt David Simpson being a coward will not repeat these allegations outside of Westminster.

"Given this history I would expect all of us, the media included, to approach this latest stunt with extreme caution.

"What Simpson's speech this evening does of course publicly expose is his close family ties to the loyalist Lutton family - one of whom is of course a convicted UVF killer. Maybe the media will now explore this angle given Mr. Simpson's sudden willingness to discuss the past.

"Unionist death squads in the past never stopped me going about my work representing Sinn Féin and the people who elect me. A unionist MP standing up in the British House of Commons will not succeed in this either.

"I suspect that this stunt has more to do with leadership ripples and positioning going on within the DUP than anything else, and I for one don't intend to be commenting any further on this nonsense." ENDS
