Treatment of haulage employees ‘scandalous’
North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said that over 200 employees who lost their jobs at Reid Transport in North Antrim have been treated scandalously.
Mr McKay said:
"The way that workers at Reid Transport have been treated since they were informed that they had lost their jobs has been nothing short of scandalous. Many employees had to learn of their job-loss through the media and third party sources and are still waiting to be contacted by their employer with an explanation.
"One worker went to start their evening shift last night and was told that they were not even going to be allowed inside the factory gates. Since that time the employers have not spoken to employees regarding what has happened and have not even issued a statement. I think that given the years of service that employees have given here that that is the very least they deserve.
"You even have a situation now where lorry-drivers are struggling to get home from England because the company credit card that they use for fuel has been cancelled and because of other problems created by the company.
"Employees, their families and people outside the company who will lose their jobs as a result of the knock-on effect are not only devastated but angry at the way that this has been handled by the employers.
"This is a terrible blow for any family in the leadup to Christmas and I would urge the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment to make an urgent and immediate statement on this matter." ENDS
