Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the news that Derry City's well known Republican Youth group Tóirsire (meaning Torch Carriers), is to launch as Ógra Shinn Féin Doire this coming Tuesday 27th November.
Mr McCartney said
"The Republican youth group Tóirsire were central to many of the commemorations and events that took place during last years 25th Anniversary of the 1980-81 Hungerstrikes. They have also campaigned on many issues most recently the case of the Miami 5 when they collected hundreds of signatures calling for the men's release. They subsequently handed the petition over to the Cuban Ambassador to Ireland Noel Carrillo.
"The new Ógra Shinn Féin Doire will offer a good positive and vibrant outlet for young people interested in Republican and international politics."
Ógra Uladh organiser Johnny McGibbon announced the developments today,
"The Republican Youth group in Derry City, Tóirsire, is to become a new Ógra Shinn Féin Cumann this Tuesday 27th November. The inaugural meeting will begin at 7pm in the Sinn Féin office, in the Ráth Mór complex. I look forward to working with the new Cumann in the months ahead, and would encourage all Ógra and young Republican activists to make an effort to attend the meeting to show support for the new Cumann."
