Minister Ritchie putting lives at risk - Sinn Féin

26 November, 2007

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Older People, Newry Armagh MLA Micky Brady has said that the Social Development Minister's decision to cut funding for the "Warm Homes Scheme" by 50% will put peoples lives at risk.

He said,

"The Warm Homes Scheme, funded by the Department for Social Development, provides grants to make homes warmer, healthier and more energy efficient and is aimed at those most in need.

"Minister Ritchie's decision will put people's lives at risk. Her neo-liberal approach has shocked many and is a retrograde step.

"The elderly, disabled and most vulnerable in our communities will face increased burden and abandonment.

"By cutting the warm homes scheme by 50% the Minister has shown that she has little or no strategy.

"Minister Margaret Ritchie needs to start showing some leadership and a little initiative in dealing with this current crisis. There is no point standing idly by and blaming others." ENDS
