Martin McGuinness attends Elevation of Archbishop Brady

Deputy First Minister and Mid-Ulster MP Martin McGuinness has travelled to Rome for the elevation of Archbishop, Sean Brady to the position of Cardinal.

Before leaving Mr. McGuinness said:

"I extend warmest congratulations and best wishes for the future to Cardinal-elect Sean Brady and look forward to attending the ceremony elevating him to this high office. It is a great personal honour for me to be present at such an auspicious and historic occasion. This will be the first time in history that Ireland will have three Cardinals.

"The ceremony to create 22 new Cardinals in all will be celebrated by his Holiness Pope Benedict XV1 in Saint Peters Square on Saturday morning."

Following the Ceremony Deputy First Minister McGuinness will attend lunch at the Irish College in Rome and then a reception hosted by President, Mary McAleese in the Irish Embassy.

On Sunday he will attend the Papal Mass at the Vatican followed by lunch hosted by the Irish government.
