Drink driving initiative‏

29 November, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the launch of the joint initiative by the PSNI and the Garda Siochana to tackle drink driving over the Christmas period.

Mr McCartney said,

"The initiative launched at Bridgend on the Derry Donegal border today highlighted the fact that some people felt immune by crossing the border but this cross border approach to drink driving has eliminated that escape route.

"Every year families are devastated by the carnage that often accompanies drink driving and any initiative to tackle the problem needs to be supported.

"Drink driving is wrong at any time of the year but there seems to be an increase over the Christmas period that needs to be addressed. For some reason there is a culture across Ireland of acceptance of people having a couple of drinks and getting behind a wheel and this needs to be confronted and dealt with.

"People should be under no illusion drink driving is wrong and those who participate in it are a threat to the community and stopping them driving should be a priority for us all.

"The death toll on Irish roads is unacceptable with many of the accidents attributed to excess alcohol. Sinn Féin has campaigned for the legal limit to be reduced and will support any initiative to eradicate this problem once and for all." ENDS
