Adams to host 'A Celebration of the Irish Language' in Stormont

30 November, 2007

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP MLA will host 'A Celebration of the Irish Language' in the Great Hall in Stormont, Friday 7 December.

The event is being co-sponsored by Foras na Gaeilge and representatives from Irish Language bodies and organisations across the island of Ireland will be in attendance.

Commenting on the event Mr Adams said;

"The Irish language has made great strides forward in recent years. Much of this has been community driven, and is down to the hard work and dedication of teachers, parents, Irish language activists and others who kept Irish alive down the years.

"Today the Irish language is growing, and increasing numbers of young people want to speak it.

"The key to the continued growth of the Irish language is to ensure that it is a vibrant part of peoples' everyday lives.

"It is also vital that we celebrate the achievements that have been made in the promotion and development of the Irish Language in recent years.

"Next Friday's event is an important part of this.

"It will provide an opportunity for Irish language activists, musicians, community and political activists, children and others to showcase the best of Irish music and language and culture.

"The Irish Language is part of what we are, it is part of where we all come from, and it must be part of the future that we pass on to our children." ENDS
