Road Carnage – Slow Down

1 December, 2007

Sinn Féin Road Safety Spokesperson, Newry Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan speaking after 5 road deaths over the last 24 hours has said that every driver needs to take responsibility on the roads and slow down.

Mr Boylan said:

"Every single death on our roads is a personal and family tragedy.

"While every accident is different we know that speed is a key factor. We need to slow down and also recognise that weather conditions, when it is wet, icy or greasy, will impact on road handling.

"We know that there are accident blackspots where the layout of the road makes driving difficult and Sinn Féin have repeatedly called for an audit so that we can make improvements on our worst stretches of road.

"Sinn Féin have also been vocal in our demand for a zero tolerance to drink driving. Drivers know that just one drink impacts on driver judgement.

"The utter tragedy of the carnage on our roads is that it should be totally avoidable." ENDS
