Maskey questions leniency for suspected drug dealers

1 December, 2007

Sinn Féin South Belfast MLA and Policing Board member Alex Maskey has questioned the decision by the judiciary to grant bail on a number of occassions to suspected drug dealers with, at times, no objection from the PSNI.

He said:

'As recent as last night anti-drugs initiatives from the PSNI aimed at tackling the supply of drugs have then been hampered as suspected drug dealers are granted bail.

'I have spoken the PSNI on this issue and feel that when at times no objection from the PSNI to bail applications is made, a mockery of the judicial process ensues.

'"Society will not tolerate drug dealers. Communities expect a joined up approach from the wider criminal justice family to deliver a joined-up service." Críoch
