Investing for Health Strategy the key to better health

5 December, 2007

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Carál Ní Chuilín has welcomed the commitment of the Health Minister to public health at an 'Investing for Health' conference in Armagh City Hotel today but warned Michael McGimpsey that the to key improving health outcomes and taking pressure of the Health Service is to ensure the effective implementation of Bairbre de Brún's Investing for Health Strategy.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"Michael McGimpsey, like all of the ministers in the Executive, is concerned about the impact that financial pressures will have on the departmental budget.

"I believe that the key to ensuring the delivery of essential health services, including improvements in areas such as mental health, is really delivering on the public health agenda. Prevention is not just better than cure, especially for the individual; it is a much more effective use of available resource.

"The key to improving health outcomes and taking pressure of the Health Service is to ensure the effective implementation of Bairbre de Brún's Investing for Health Strategy.

"This means ensuring that each and every government department and agency plays its full role in the public health agenda and particularly in tackling the massive health inequalities that exist right across our society. It means tackling unemployment, poverty, educational underachievement and it means empowering people and communities in the decisions that affect their lives." ENDS
