Spirit of McCreevy lives on in Budget 2008 – Ó Snodaigh

6 December, 2007

Sinn Féin Community Safety Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said today that the €64 million allocated in Budget 2008 to the Drugs Initiative and Young Persons Facilities and Services Fund in comparison to the €76 million allocated to the Horse and Greyhound Industry starkly example government spending priorities.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh continued:

"Obviously any increase in funding to the Drugs Initiative and Young Persons Facilities Fund is welcome; however the increase does not nearly go far enough. The total for 2008 is to be €64 million with €12.5 million of these monies allocated to the national drugs strategy.

"What makes this under funding of such a socially critical area so frustrating is that government has in Budget 2008 allocated €76 million to the Horse and Greyhound Racing Industry. When comparing the two figures no one can be in any doubt what this government's spending priorities are. Disappointingly, the spirit of Charlie McCreevy continues on in the work of Finance Minister Brian Cowan." CRÍOCH
