Anderson welcomes Ilex plans

6 December, 2007

Commenting on the plans for Fort George announced by Ilex today, Sinn Féin's Martina Anderson MLA (Foyle) said:

"I welcome the publication of the proposed plans for the Fort George site and would encourage everyone possible to make a contribution to the consultation process that is now in train.

"It is important to stress that we must get this right as it is unlikely that Derry will ever get an opportunity like this again. We must ask ourselves if the proposed schemes are the correct blend for what should be a signet project for the City. Does it compare for instance with the vision of the 'Titanic Project' for Belfast?

"As part of the of the "Stand up for Derry" campaign I would encourage the developers who are eventually awarded the contracts for the final development to display a commitment to Derry by including a determination to utilise locally recruited workers and provide opportunities for the long term unemployed, apprentices and trades people.

"This development must be approached in such a way that will deliver a genuine and sustainable impact in terms of tackling inequality, deprivation and unemployment." ENDS
