Minister announces Equality consultation on Education plans

10 December, 2007

Sinn Féin Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has encouraged people interested in education to give their views on the draft Budget proposals for the department.

The Minister said:

"Education is a high priority in the allocation of funding from the Executive and it is my responsibility as minister to ensure equality is at the heart of how we use our allocation.

"It is important that all groups and individuals have the opportunity to influence how this is spent. I am particularly keen that section 75 groups, including people with disabilities, women and under-represented groups give their views on the draft Programme for Government, draft Budget and the Investment Strategy. These are important documents as they set out our future plans and will impact on every individual across the North."

Under the Executive's draft Budget, the Department of Education's allocation would increase by 4.3% per annum on average over the next three years. The Department invites written responses and also intends to hold public consultation meetings during January. Details of these will be advertised in the local press.
