Sinn Féin MLAs attend Arts funding protest at Stormont

10 December, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA and Culture Committee member Francie Brolly has attended a "Keep Our Arts Alive Rally" from those working in the Arts sector demanding that the Culture Minister focus on his spending for the Arts.

Mr Brolly said,

"Spending on Arts and Culture is about much more than the Ulster Orchestra. It is about more than enhancing the quality of life.

"Community arts in particular promotes development, social inclusion and allows people to explore and understand local identity.

"It is with grave concern that the Culture department lodged an £10 million underspend for 2006/2007 and that there was a £1.2 million loss in the six county Events Company also.

"Unlike Nero, Minister Poots should be proactive and allocate his Arts budget with greater gusto rather than allow local arts to decline as he listens to the Ulster Orchestra." Críoch
