Dublin drugs seizure welcomed

13 December, 2007

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has congratulated Gardaí on the seizure of €500,000 of cocaine in Dublin this morning. However Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the quantity of drugs seized in the country is only a small percentage of the total amount entering the country and called for resources for Garda Drugs Squads to be doubled.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "The seizure of a significant amount of cocaine in Dublin this morning is a welcome development in the fight against drugs and I want to congratulate the Gardaí involved.

"This seizure comes at a time when the country has been shocked by numerous drug related deaths and when there is pressure on the Gardaí to step up the fight against drugs.

"However the amount of drugs seized in the country is only a small percentage of the quantity of drugs actually entering the country. Therefore I want to call on Justice Minister Brian Lenihan to double the resources for the Garda Drugs Squads to allow them to effectively target dealers and traffickers." ENDS
