Retention of Cancer Screening Services‏

13 December, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed the decision by Health Minister Michael McGimpsey to retain cancer screening services at Altnagelvin Hospital.

Ms Anderson said:

"Sinn Féin campaigned hard for the retention of cancer screening services at Altnagelvin and presented Health Minister Michael McGimpsey with a petition that Sinn Féin activists gathered during a door to door canvas.

"Mr McGimpsey has indicated that the reason he has decided to retain the cancer screening services at Altnagelvin was the amount of public opinion opposed to their move. This is a clear demonstration that the "Stand Up for Derry" can produce results if everyone puts their shoulder to the wheel.

"This decision will allow people in the North West to have access to cancer services without having to travel to Belfast. The early detection of cancer is crucial if it is to be treated properly and this decision will undoubtedly save lives.

"Sinn Féin will continue to campaign for full cancer services to be situated in the North West region." ENDS
