Ferris welcomes new regional routes but warns against government complacency

15 December, 2007

Sinn Féin TD and Spokesperson on Rural Development Martin Ferris has this weekend welcomed the new services to France and Britain which are to operate out of Shannon and Knock Airports but has warned against government complacency following the news.

Deputy Ferris said:

“Business development in all regional airports is to be welcomed however government must not now return to complacency with regard to further development of the islands airports.

“Regional airports are a critical lifeline to the sustainability and going forward development of industry and tourism in rural Ireland.

“Government must also acknowledge that whilst the impact of losing the Aer Lingus Shannon Heathrow route has been softened by the new route to Charles de Gaulle, the threats facing the airlines workers remain.

“Yet again I am making the demand that government as a major stakeholder in Aer Lingus actively participates in the board’s decision making process so as to secure all existing routes and to protect workers term, conditions and employment.” CRÍOCH
