Did PSNI have pre-knowledge about impending Strabane attack?

16 December, 2007

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty says that those who carried out the pipe bomb attack on Strabane PSNI station last night have absolutely nothing to offer the community but has also questioned the extent of pre-knowledge the PSNI had about an impending attack in the town last night.

He said,

"Those behind this attack have absolutely nothing to offer the community. Devoid of either strategy or support the rationale of those behind such attacks is becoming increasingly irrational. If this was planned in response to local Sinn Fein councillors taking up their positions on the local DPP, then it is a further illustration of reactionary thinking behind this futile campaign.

"For the last couple of weeks a PSNI helicopter has been an almost constant feature over the town during the hours of darkness. In the hours leading up to last night's attack people in different parts of the town observed an unusually high level of both covert and overt police activity.

"So while the local community are fed up to the back teeth with the such incidents many local people are also now questioning the extent to which the PSNI had pre-knowledge about an impending attack in the town last night." ENDS
