New prison at Magilligan would be detrimental to tourism

17 December, 2007

Sinn Féin East Derry MLA has said that any decision to build a new Prison at Magilligan would have a hugely detrimental impact on the potential to develop tourism in the area.

Mr Brolly said:

"The Magilligan area, Magilligan Strand and Lough Foyle have an immense natural beauty. Yet, this natural resource is under developed. There is a huge potential for tourism to play a major role in the economic regeneration of the region.

"To make a decision based on this being the 'cheapest' option only demonstrates how little the NIO think of the people of the North West. We don't want the huge potential of the region or its beauty to be sacrificed for a few pounds and pence.

"The truth is that any decision to build a new Prison at Magilligan will have a hugely detrimental impact on the potential to develop tourism in the area and I see this proposal as a retrograde step." Críoch
