SF anger at Magilligan prison announcement

18 December, 2007

Sinn Féin East Derry MLA Francie Brolly has reacted angrily at the decision to build a new prison at Magilligan; an "area of outstanding beauty."

"Our position is that Magilligan Point, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is the last place on earth we would want to see a prison. We are not convinced by the economic, financial or capacity shortfall arguments put by the minister to justify his decision.

Demand for prison capacity could be cut by 56% overnight if the draconian practice of automatic custodial sentences for non-payment of fines was abolished.

Sinn Féin maintain that the tourism potential of Magilligan Point would be a golden opportunity to create hundreds of value added sustainable jobs and generate a positive knock-on effect for both the local economy and that of the entire northwest region.

"This is still a long term project and we will continue to make this argument over the next five to ten years. If a week is a long time in politics, ten years is a lifetime."
