McDonald welcomes ECJ judgment on Dublin Fire Brigade
Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald has welcomed the European Court of Justice decision to reject the efforts of a private ambulance operator to force Dublin city’s emergency ambulance services to be out to private tender.
The Dublin MEP said:
“The Dublin Fire Brigade has provided an emergency ambulance service to this city since 1898. The men and women of the service respond to over 90,000 emergency calls annually from throughout the Dublin region each year.
“Forcing the privatisation of this vital and established public service would have quite literally been a disaster for the people of this city. The Dublin Fire Brigade is in the business of saving lives not generating profit. That is where the focus of their work must remain.
“Sinn Féin held a number of meetings with Dublin Fire Brigade and have argued the case against privatising the service in the Dáil and EU Parliament.
“To ensure this service is not open to predatory private operators in the future I am calling on Health Minister Mary Harney to make Dublin Fire Brigade the Statutory Provider of Dublin's emergency ambulance service. Consistently of service, standards and care must be safeguarded.” CRÍOCH
