MLA Appeals on Behalf Of Blue Badge Holders‏

19 December, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Mickey Brady has appealed to people to make sure they leave Blue Badge Parking spaces free.

A number of disabled people and their carers have contacted Mickey Brady about the selfish disregard shown by non-disabled whilst using local car parks and shopping centres in Newry.

Mr Brady said:

"A number of local disabled people have contacted me to highlight their frustration about non disabled motorists taking parking spaces designated for Blue Badge Holders This is a big problem all year round, but it is worse in the run up to Christmas.

"Some places in Newry like Daisy Hill Hospital and the Quays Shopping Centre operate measures to deter motorists who abuse the disabled parking spaces."

"Commonsense should prevail regarding the abuse of disabled parking bays, however there are people who are selfish and uncaring and they think they can park anywhere they want.

"The law is not very clear when it comes to using disabled parking bays in shopping centres. I would encourage the management in local shopping centres to look at schemes in operation in other areas. For example, in Merseyside a pilot scheme is in operation where parking cheats are fined for abusing disabled parking bays and parent and child spaces.

"In the meantime I would appeal to people to give some thought to the difficulties experienced by people with mobility difficulties and leave the Blue Badge spaces free for those who need them most." ENDS
