Lack of housing detrimentally affecting thousands this Christmas – Ó Snodaigh

19 December, 2007

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD called on the Government to make required funding available to ensure that everyone has access to appropriate housing as is their right. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said a lack of housing and inappropriate and poor housing will detrimentally affect thousands of people across the state this Christmas.

He said, "A lack of housing, inappropriate housing and poor housing standards will detrimentally affect thousands of people across the state this Christmas. This includes the 5,000 people who are homeless and the over 43,000 people who remain on social housing waiting lists.

"A recent revelation by the Simon Communities shows that 55 people who used it services in 2006 have since died and that 44% of excess winter deaths are associated with poor housing standards. This further demonstrates the extent to which a lack of appropriate housing costs lives and demonstrates why the Government needs to take action now and make required funding available to ensure everyone has access to appropriate housing as is their right."
