Sinn Féin MEP comments on EU Fisheries Summit

19 December, 2007

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has described the deal secured by Michelle Gildernew at the Fisheries Summit in Brussels as the best that could be achieved in the circumstances.

Ms de Brún said that she had received a detailed briefing from the Minister during the negotiations which showed that the North of Ireland was facing a very difficult situation. She congratulated the Minster for her perseverance and also for the transparent manner in which she carried out her work at the fisheries council.

Ms de Brún said:

"I received a detailed briefing from the Minister during the negotiations which showed that the North of Ireland was facing a very difficult situation. I believe that the deal secured by Michelle Gildernew at the Fisheries Summit in Brussels is the best that could be achieved in these circumstances. I congratulate the Minster for her perseverance and also for the transparent way she carried out her work at the Fisheries Council.

Ms de Brún continued:

"Another major issue of concern to fisherman at present is the price of fuel. Many fleets will find it hard to put to sea even given the quota decided this week in Brussels

"As a contribution to combating climate change and as a way of reducing costs to our fishing fleet, any help that the Minster could secure to aid moves to lower fuel use in fishing vessels would be very useful." Críoch
