Gildernew consults on CAP Health Check

20 December, 2007

Sinn Fein Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew MP MLA, has today announced consultation arrangements on the preliminary Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Health Check proposals.

Outlining the consultation arrangements, the Minister said:

"The CAP Health Check is very important for our local agriculture industry, as these preliminary proposals for changes to milk quotas, modulation and the Single Farm Payment scheme will have significant effects across the sector. My intention is to consult widely to ensure that stakeholders have the opportunity to supply their views both to my Department and to the EU Commission ahead of the negotiations that lie ahead.

"My officials will be writing to our stakeholders shortly asking them to send views to the EU Commission. I would encourage all other interested parties to respond to the CAP Health Check proposals, which are available to read on my Department's website. It is very important that all respondents send their responses to the Commission by 15 January 2008."

All responses to the consultation should be sent to the EU Commission and copied to DARD and the European Parliament Agriculture Committee Rapporteur. Details of where to send responses, the full set of CAP Health Check proposals and a brief summary of the main issues arising are available online at:

EU Commission proposals on the CAP Health Check were published by the Commission on 20 November 2007.

It is anticipated legislative proposals will be published in May 2008. Agreement by EU Member States is anticipated by the end of 2008 and possible implementation in 2009.
