Judicial double standards for Castlederg nationalists - Doherty

20 December, 2007

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty says that the impartiality of the judicial system is once again in the dock after events at Strabane Courthouse this morning.

"He was speaking after a judge wavered bail conditions imposed against a large number of loyalists who pleaded guilty to charges including assault and damage to property in the nationalist Ferguson Crescent area of Castlederg following a loyalist band parade in August while ruling that strict bail conditions, including a 11pm-6 am curfew, remain in place against four young nationalists who are pleading not guilty to charges brought against them during the early morning loyalist rampage.

He said,

"Today's judgement once again puts the impartiality of the judicial system in the dock. Given the context of this court case is a loyalist rampage into a nationalist area following a loyalist band parade, this decision not only smacks of double standards but will do nothing to instil confidence in the policing and justice system amongst the nationalist people of Castlederg and surrounding areas."
