Omagh public inquiry with cross-border remit needed - Doherty MP MLA

21 December, 2007

West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty MLA has today highlighted the catalogue of serious failings by the police service into the Omagh investigation and said that a public inquiry with cross border remit is now needed.

Mr Doherty said;

"Mr. Justice Weir damning indictment of the police handling of the Omagh investigation highlights a catalogue of serious failings by the police service which needs to be urgently answered including the conduct of senior police officers.

"In the course of this critically flawed investigation an innocent man, Sean Hoey, was jailed for over four years.

"The families are quite rightly deeply disappointed and dismayed that almost a decade on from this terrible tragedy they are no closer to truth and justice.

"A public inquiry, with a cross border remit now needs to be urgently established." Críoch
