Child’s death in Road Traffic Accident – ‘tragic’

22 December, 2007

Sinn Féin Road Safety spokesperson, Cathal Boylan, MLA for Newry and South Armagh, has spoken of his shock at the death of a six year old boy in a road traffic accident near Loughgall.

Mr Boylan said:

"The loss of such a young person is tragic at any time, but when a child is taken from loved ones a few days before Christmas it is even more poignant' said Cathal.

"Initially, when the crash happened on Thursday evening, though the youngster was seriously injured, it was hoped he would pull through, but the rumours started to spread yesterday afternoon that this was not the case, and sadly that has proved to be true.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the parents and family of this young child at this time. Unfortunately, not only has this special Christmas period been destroyed for this family this year, but it will never be the same again in future years, such is the legacy a tragic road accident has on everyone involved. I hope that the others injured in this accident make a full recovery.

"I once again appeal to all road users, please take extra care, allow for busier traffic than normal at this time of year on all our roads and take consideration of the weather conditions. No one wants the grief visiting this family at Christmas to be repeated in another household." ENDS
