Double resources for Garda Drugs Squads - Sinn Féin

23 December, 2007

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has congratulated Gardaí on the major seizure of drugs in Monaghan yesterday and repeated his call for resources for Garda Drugs Squads to be doubled. Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "While I congratulate the Gardaí on the seizure of 30,000 ecstasy tablets and two kilograms of cannabis yesterday I want to reiterate Sinn Féin's demand for the resources allocated to Garda Drugs squads to be doubled. "The quantity of drugs seized by the Gardaí is actually only a very small proportion of the amount of drugs entering the state. Therefore it is imperative that the Gardaí are given every available resource to tackle the drugs crisis in this state. "Tackling the drugs crisis is crucial to community safety and ending the ever increasing levels of violent crime. This crisis must be treated as an emergency and be given the same priority that was given when the threat of Foot and Mouth disease entering the state loomed." ENDS
