Attacks on Hospital Staff – Zero tolerance approach needed

3 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Carál Ní Chuilín MLA has said that attacks and verbal abuse on A&E Hospital Staff have a huge personal cost on people carrying out demanding jobs in the first place and called on the Health Minister to ensure that zero tolerance of attacks on staff means zero tolerance.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"These attacks on our hospital staff come at huge cost. There is the personal cost for people carrying out demanding and important jobs in the first place and there are the wider costs for our health and social care services in terms of injuries to staff and the impact this has on service delivery.

"What is clear is that zero tolerance of attacks on staff, must mean zero tolerance.

"We all have a part to play in challenging violence against any of our public sector workers.

"We need to ensure that any and all attacks against hospital staff workers result in appropriate punishment and we need to ensure good resourcing to support staff training in dealing with potentially difficult situations within the health environment and support for victims of attack." ENDS
