Call for road safety to be reviewed after fatal Cushendall accident

1 January, 2008

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has called on Roads Service to review road safety on the Ballyeamon Road outside Cushendall after a fatal accident occurred there in the early hours of this morning.

Mr McKay said

"Local Sinn Féin representatives in the Glens have been calling for crash barriers to be erected on the Ballyeamon Road for many years and measures must now be put in place to ensure that accidents like this one can be prevented in the future.

"I have put in a request to Roads Service to review the safety of this route and have asked them to take action to ensure that the risk of any further accidents taking place here is minimised."

Mr McKay, who knew the victim, said that the local community in Dunloy were still coming to terms with the shock of the incident.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone in the local community is with Eamon's family at this time. He was very well known in the area and will be sorely missed. "

Local Councillor Oliver McMullan said:

"The section of the road where this accident took place is notoriously dangerous and I have made repeated calls for crash barriers to be erected here. Action must be taken immediately to improve road safety at this part of the road." ENDS
