Investment key to tackling hospital infection

3 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson, Carál Ní Chuilín has said that investment is the key to tackling hospital infection.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"We need to see resources targeted at getting people out of hospital as quickly as possible, with support for community based services for people in their own homes. This would help to end the problems of bed blocking and hospital over-crowding.

"We also need to see investment in areas such as laundry services and the re-introduction of a laundry service of hospital staff uniforms. We also need to see changing area set aside for staff.

"The reality is that there is now less money spent and fewer people employed to maintain hygiene standards in our hospitals.

"The refocusing of resources in the development of community based care is also central to not just tackling hospital infection but also improving overall care and public health." ENDS
