Sinn Féin pledges support for Pan Irish Sea Alliance

16 October, 2003

Sinn Féin Spokespersons on Fisheries Martin Ferris TD and former Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Gerry McHugh have welcomed the initiative of the Pan Irish Sea Alliance in highlighting the need for urgent action to save the livelihoods of fishermen dependent on the Irish Sea. They were speaking following the meeting of the group with opposition spokespersons in Dublin last night, which was also attended by Louth Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan. The group brings together fishermen from across Ireland and from British ports in an effort to force the Irish and British Governments to radically alter their approach to the fishery.

Deputy Ferris raised the issue this morning when he attempted to have the Dáil adjourn its business to discuss "the plight of fishermen in the Irish Sea, and the need for the authorities in Ireland and Britain to plan a co-ordinated approach involving the fishermen and taking into account that the scientific data responsible for the current conservation plans is called into question by fishermen who claim that stocking levels are higher than officially reported."ENDS
