Failure to increase GP training places makes mockery of primary care strategy - Ó Caoláin

7 January, 2008

Commenting on the revelation from the Irish College of General Practitioners that the HSE has refused to deliver promised funding to increase the number of GP training places for 2008, Sinn Féin Dáil leader and spokesperson on Health & Children Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:

"The refusal of the HSE to provide for an increase in GP training places to 150 in 2008 as recommended makes a mockery of the Government's primary care strategy. Health Minister Mary Harney has repeatedly paid lip service to the vital role of primary care in our health services and the pivotal role of the GP. Now we find that an essential element in delivering better primary care is being reneged upon by the HSE. The Minister should intervene to ensure that these training places are provided for 2008."
