Bus Drivers Basic Pay Needs Raised

17 October, 2003

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has added her voice to those supporting the demand of the Translink drivers for their basic pay rate to be raised to compensate for the loss of income caused by a European directive cutting the amount of overtime they can work.

Ms Gildernew said:

" The reality is that for years bus drivers have supplemented their low level of basic pay by working large amounts of overtime. A new European directive on working time now dictates that drivers cannot work the same amount of overtime thus resulting in a serious decline in income.

" Translink have a duty to ensure that their workers are not penalised because of an EU directive. They should move immediately into discussions with the bus drivers union about raising the level of basic pay to an acceptable level." ENDS
