Housing Minister asked to ensure water tank safety comes up to highest standards

9 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Fra McCann has today lodged a priority written question to the Minister for Social Development asking, in light of the recent tragic death of a baby due to a water tank in Somerset, England, what safety measures are taken by the authorities who provide social and private housing to ensure that accidents like this do not occur in the six counties.

Mr McCann said,

"Firstly, as Housing spokesperson, I would like to send my sincere condolences to the family of baby Rhianna Hardie, who was killed when boiling water cascaded over her cot after a tank exploded in the roof of her council home in Somerset, England.

"This is simply a tragedy.

"On hearing the news I have lodged a priority written question to Margaret Ritchie asking what safety precautions are in place to ensure that such a tragic accident like this does not happen in Ireland.

"There is an onus on Minister Ritchie to provide the best standards in housing safety and I await her answer." Críoch
