Sinn Féin MEP welcomes 'positive and worthwhile' six county Executive delegation visit to Brussels

10 January, 2008

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún speaking after a successful six county Executive delegation visit to Brussels has welcomed a positive and worthwhile trip by the First and Deputy First Ministers and the OFM/DFM Junior Ministers.

Ms de Brún said,

"I welcome the visit to Brussels by Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness and would encourage the Executive to continue to develop their working relationship with the European Union. The joint visit by the First and Deputy first Ministers to Brussels, following on from their successful US trip, sends an important signal to the EU whose positive effect cannot be underestimated.

"I welcome the meeting between the Executive Ministers and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hubner and EU commissioner Marianne Fischer Boel.

"The EU has played an important contribution in underpinning the peace process through various funding streams and we must ensure maximum support in the time ahead. Through the work of the Task Force and a much invigorated working relationship, we can access the full range of EU programmes based on the most up-to-date information on what is available.

" We are also more than willing to share our experience with others in the hope that progress at home can also contribute in some small way to progress across Europe and beyond." Críoch
