If Empey thinks Universities vital then why won’t he give students a fair deal?

10 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Paul Butler has ridiculed the comments from Employment and Learning Minister Reg Empey as totally failing to disguise the fact that there is a drop in university enrolments that cannot be divorced from the impact of Students Fees, Tuition Fees and financial hardship.

Mr Butler said:

"Reg Empey can't even bring himself to come clean and tell us exactly what the decrease in university enrolments in 2006-07 is.

"Talking about preliminary data for this year or students studying abroad fails, totally, to disguise the fact that there is a drop in university enrolments that cannot be divorced from the impact of Students Fees, Tuition Fees and financial hardship.

"If Reg Empey believes that universities are vital then why won't he commit himself to giving a fair to students?" ENDS
