Sinn Féin MLA appeals for calm after latest GAA attack

12 January, 2008

Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has said that news of another attack on a GAA Club in the constituency was cause for concern and he has appealed for calm.

Mr Boylan said:

"The GAA plays a huge role in our local communities. It is a positive force that particularly is a focus for many families and children. This is a despicable attack. It is an attack on the entire community.

"This attack has all the hallmarks of a sectarian attack

"These latest attacks are very sinister developments. Sectarian attacks whether on GAA clubs or Orange Halls have to stop. There is a need to remove this cancer in our society that provides the oxygen for sectarian attacks such as this, and the attacks in recent weeks that we have seen on Orange Halls. All such attacks are wrong and should stop immediately.

"This further highlights the fact that there are still those in our society who are working hard to destroy the relative peace and stability that we have been working collectively to create." ENDS
