Ritchie challenged over safety of water tanks

14 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Fra McCann has challenged Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie over safety measures taken by the authorities who provide social and private housing to ensure there is no risk of a repeat of the recent tragic death of a baby due to a water tank in Somerset, England.

He has lodged a priority written question to the Minister for Social Development.

Mr McCann said,

"The tragic death of baby Rhianna Hardie, who was killed when boiling water cascaded over her cot after a water tank exploded in the roof of her council home in Somerset, England must serve as a warning.

"I have lodged a priority written question to Margaret Ritchie asking what safety precautions are in place to ensure that such a tragic accident like this does not happen in Ireland.

"There is an onus on Minister Ritchie to provide the best standards in housing safety and I await her answer." ENDS
