Children’s rights referendum must be given priority – Ó Caoláin
Speaking as it was revealed today that the planned referendum on children's rights may be delayed until 2009 Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Children Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin criticised the Government for failing to hold the referendum before now and called for it to be held at the earliest possible opportunity.
Deputy Ó Caoláin said today, "The previous Fianna Fáil led Government missed the opportunity to hold the referendum on children's rights last year on the same day as the general election. Sinn Féin had proposed that the referendum take place on that day.
"It now looks as if the planned referendum will now be put off until at least 2009. This is unacceptable. This referendum is about children's rights and should be given priority. It should be held at the earliest possible opportunity." ENDS
