DUP playing party politics with the future of our young people

14 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, Lagan Valley MLA Paul Butler commenting on the intervention of the DUP Finance Minister Peter Robinson on the debate on the future of post primary transfer arrangements has said that Peter Robinson is clearly playing party politics with the future of our young people.

Mr Butler

"Caitríona Ruane has made it clear from day one that she wants progress on her vision for the future of our schools based on consensus.

"11+ has gone. No one should be in any doubt about that. The Education Minister has cleared the way for a genuine debate on moving forward. She has made it clear that a system that fails thousands of children every year is going to change. She has given us the framework and now it is down to all of the stakeholders, the parents, teachers and political representatives to work constructively on delivering the new education system.

"The focus should now be on developing a new system of education that does not privilege a minority at the expense of those who are gaining least from the education system.

"Recklessly throwing about threats does not support a positive environment were there can be a sensible debate about how we develop an education system that is fit for the 21st century where all of our children get the opportunity to succeed." ENDS
