Seagate - Call for Minister to access European Globalisation Adjustment Fund‏

15 January, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has tabled a question to Department of Trade and Enterprise Minister Nigel Dodds to ask if he has applied to a European fund to access funding for those people laid off by Seagate in Limavady.

Mr McCartney said,

"The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund can be accessed through member states for financial assistance to employees of companies where over 1000 people have been made redundant. This money can be used to help retrain and to give guidance to employees in order to help them re-enter the workplace as well as providing mobility allowances to allow people to travel to other areas to find employment.

"Seagate Limavady clearly comes under this criteria and I have asked the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Nigel Dodds to contact the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform with the possibility of accessing the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund, in order to assist the workers in Seagate, Limavady, who are soon to lose their jobs.

"It is important that once the clamour over the loss of jobs dies down that the workers of Seagate are not forgotten and that we strive to get the best package available to allow these people to return to a working environment." ENDS
