MEP backs major European Road Safety initiative

16 January, 2008

Sinn Féin MEP Ms Bairbre de Brún has urged motorists to choose ESC (Electronic Stability Control), a new technology which could save hundreds of lives by preventing skids which often lead to accidents on our roads.

This week in Strasbourg Ms de Brún took part in a safety demonstration of the benefits of ESC and added her voice to EU Commissioners, transport safety campaigners and FIA President Max Mosley in calling for safety conscious motorists to install the new technology.

Speaking from Strasbourg Ms de Brún said:

"Last year nearly 500 people in Ireland lost their lives as a result of road accidents. There are of course many aspects to accident prevention but I'm sure incorporating new safer technologies into cars has an important part to play. I have been happy to have been associated with Ógra Shinn Féin's Moilligh Síos (Slow Down) campaign and hope that by raising the profile of ESC their campaign and all road safety campaigns can benefit."
