Culture Minister urged to exercise sensitivity - Sinn Féin

17 January, 2008

Sinn Fein MLA and Assembly Culture Committee chairperson Barry McElduff has urged the Culture Minister Edwin Poots to exercise greater sensitivity with regard to the GAA.

Mr McElduff said,

"Mr Poots was a welcome addition to the Down-Donegal GAA game.

"However in response to his remarks over Amhrán na bhFiann, our national anthem, it is clear that the GAA themselves have their own internal procedures for decision making, e.g motions at the annual congress from local clubs.

"Speaking personally as an ardent GAA fan and member of the organisation myself, I believe the playing of the national anthem at games is very important to Irish people throughout the island of Ireland.

"While we welcome Minister Poot's attempts at outreach, as Culture Minister, he should also show greater sensitivity on this issue." Críoch
